Monday Mindset: Breathe. Trust. Compete.

Monday Mindset: Breathe. Trust. Compete.

Brandon Guyer is a mental performance coach and former Major League Baseball player. The Guardian Baseball Mindset Collection brings many of his game-changing mindset to apparel.

During the Monday Mindset, Guardian Baseball and Brandon Guyer will be presenting a different mindset every week to help you unlock your fullest potential. To succeed physically, you first need to win mentally.

Today’s Mindset: Breathe. Trust. Compete.

What it means:

Breathe: A deep, meaningful breath is your ticket to calm confidence and present-moment focus.

Trust: Believe deep down that you have what it takes to succeed.

Compete: Go out, let it rip, and COMPETE one pitch at a time with all you’ve got.

Who it’s for:

“Breathe. Trust. Compete.” is a Mindset best suited for athletes who can feel the pressure to perform. We’ve all been there – it’s easy to be filled with doubts when you step up to the plate. What if you strike out? What if you let your teammates down? Your coach? Your family?

While we often get lost in doubts and nerves, the best athletes are able to take a deep breath and “reset,” even during the toughest of situations. Whether it’s Mike Trout at-bat with two outs in the bottom of the ninth or LeBron James stepping up to the free-throw line trying to close out a game, watch what they do: they’ll take a deep breath, clear their mind, and cast out all doubts as the dial-in on what needs to be done.

What it looks like:

Breathe. Trust. Compete. appears all over the field. Maybe you’re a pitcher facing the best hitter in the league. Maybe you’re a batter facing the best pitcher in the league. Or maybe, even, you’re the potential game-winning run on third base and feel all eyes on you.

Doubts and fears can crop up in any facet of the game, but just as quickly as they arise, the right mental conditioning will also help put them to rest.

On our Breathe. Trust. Compete. shirt, the text has been positioned upside down. Why? Because when you look down, he message is easy to read and looking right back up at you.

Tell yourself to take a deep breath, know that you’ve trained for this, and then give it everything you’ve got.
