Monday Mindset: Actions / Feelings

Monday Mindset: Actions / Feelings

Brandon Guyer is a mental performance coach and former Major League Baseball player. The Guardian Baseball Mindset Collection brings many of his game-changing Mindsets to apparel.

During the Monday Mindset, Guardian Baseball and Brandon Guyer will be presenting a different Mindset every week to help you unlock your greatest potential. To succeed physically, you need to win mentally, too.

Today’s Mindset: Actions / Feelings (Actions over feelings)

What it means:

Let your actions determine how you feel – not the other way around. Feelings are not facts; they’re perceptions. Once you start acting, matching feelings will arise. If you want to feel confident, ACT confident. Act it until you become it.

Who it’s for:

Actions / Feelings is for the athlete having a difficult day or lacking confidence and motivation. None of us can be high-energy and ambitious all the time – that’s not how human beings are made. There will undoubtedly be days in which you don’t feel like going to the gym, hitting the batting cage, or even playing a game.

Don’t worry. Again, that’s normal.

But do you know what’s exceptional? Being mentally disciplined enough to say, “Wow, I might not be wanting to workout right now but I need to.” The athletes that can do that – those who are mentally tough and can occasionally “bully” themselves into putting in the extra work – those are the athletes that are going to the next level.

What it looks like:

Actions / Feelings is never easy. In fact, it’s always difficult.

In 2020, Cooper Kupp tweeted, “Sometime’s hard work pays off. Sometimes hard work is just hard work. Find a way to accept both.” Is it a coincidence that he started his 2022 by finishing off one of the greatest seasons ever for an NFL receiver and winning Super Bowl MVP? Probably not.

While sometimes “hard work is just hard work” and you might not immediately feel the benefits from the time you’ve invested, Actions / Feelings is having the mental fortitude to keep working, training, and believing in yourself even when you don’t feel like it.

If you do this, you’ll manifest your own reality.
