Brandon Guyer is a mental performance coach and former Major League Baseball player. The Guardian Baseball Mindset Collection brings many of his game-changing Mindsets to apparel.
During the Monday Mindset, Guardian Baseball and Brandon Guyer will be presenting a different Mindset every week to help you unlock your greatest potential. To succeed physically, you need to win mentally, too.
Today’s Mindset: It’s not supposed to be easy
What it means:
If it was easy to play in the Major Leagues, everybody would do it. It’s not. It takes work. It’s not supposed to be easy.
Who it’s for:
This mindset is for the athlete having a bad day. You’ve struck out, missed a ground ball, or made an unforced error. When you’re down on yourself, remember that it’s not supposed to be easy. If it was, everybody would do it. We all make mistakes – even the best of the best – so except it, embrace them, and learn as you go.
What it looks like:
You're laying in your bed, staring at the ceiling fan and thinking about the game you just played. You want to call it a disaster – for whatever reason, it did not go your way.
These are the times when this mindset should ring out the loudest. Remember that being great at something isn’t easy. Doctors study for years, actors hone their craft from an early age, and athletes practice all their lives for a chance to play at the highest level.
Don’t fool yourself into thinking that best of the best never have bad days. We all do.
Remember that, embrace it, and always try to get better.
